Rovio partners with Zappar to bring you the Angry Birds Explore App!

Through the magic of AR, users can step inside various locations of Bird Island and discover all the fun and excitement it has to offer.

As a UX Designer, I faced the challenge of managing this project with full ownership, providing a continuous stream of feedback to the Rovio Team, while also fulfilling the role of Game Designer.

Working closely with the Creative Director and Stakeholder I have involved the whole team in the creative process, empowering the team to contribute to shape this AR experience where the users can choose to decorate their own personal beach hut, play fun mini games and explore the island in full AR view. Users can purchase new and fun additions to their island and hut by earning special Anger Coins through the gameplay. Further bridging the gap between digital and physical, Angry Birds Explore comes with a scanning feature that allows users to scan special Bird Codes to help unlock content. These Bird Codes can be found on official merchandise of The Angry Birds Movie 2 or partner brand products such as Chupa Chups, PEZ, and many others.

The idea was to open the experience with a cinematic 360° view of the Bird Island to give an overview of the map. To help with the onboarding, I’ve adopted a character Red who will guide the users by breaking the 4th wall.

To make the Island accessible to be navigated, whether the user is in the right environment to launch the AR mode and avoiding to provide too much onboarding, I’ve proposed to fake the AR experience by having the 3D Island model floating on the screen with a fake tracking texture projected below.

At this point the user will be prompted to tap on the available experience or unlock a new experience through scanning a code.

If the user decides to visit the Hut in AR mode, onboarding will be shown.

To introduce a soft currency and an Anger Meter I’ve suggested to run a mini game that will suddenly interrupt Red that was welcoming the user in to the Hut, requesting the help of the user to get rid of the pigs that are invading the Hut.

Is a quick mini game where the user has to point the device to the pigs and tap on them to collect points. The collected points will be converted through the anger meeter in soft currency.

Red will continue onboarding directing the user to the item store were a mystery box will be given for free and the user will be taught on  how to place items into the Hut and interact with them.

Once the user tap on the Mystery Box this will open unveiling the first collectable item which is the Mirror. At this point an icon of the Mystery Box will be placed on-screen with a countdown providing a quick access to the Mystery Box that potentially would give to the user a daily reward.

Interacting with the Mirror will direct the user to a photo-feature, were is possible to take pictures/selfies with the collected characters.

Also the Mirror would get an on-screen icon to provide a quick access to the photo-feature section.

Red will end the tutorial showing the user how to enter the edit mode with a tap and hold action on the item that the user wish to change of position. In the edit mode is possible to take a snapshot of the collected item that can be shared on socials.
